Cutting and ritual scarification are done with a single-use surgical scalpel. Designs range from random, primitive slash to elegant tribal. Both are body modifications; a ritual scar tends to be more symbolic. Scarring is an inexact art. There's no way to guarantee that the body will hold the design the way it looks on paper. Scars can be cut lightly, so as to be temporary. They can be cut hard, to insure width and a strong line. Everything that can be done to provide the bearer the mark they desire is done, but ultimately it is the body that makes the final decision.

This gentleman chose wings as his symbol of transformation. It was an amazing experience.

Says the Lady who bears this mark:

"The way I see it, I took the symbol as a way of making a commitment to get to know myself, to
give myself love and devotion, and joining my various selves into one. The me I'm getting to know is
fantastic, and I want to affirm the commitment.

A year later, this lady came back to have the design completed and enhanced:

A full-length spinal design of significant symbols will eventually grace her back; she also added the next piece of her spinal totem between her shoulder blades:

Her partner, having participated in her rituals last year and this, craved a Templar cross to mark his journey:

The movement of his arm is causing the distension seen on the right. Relaxed, the placement is identical to the stencil.

Spiraling upward:

This design was done over a considerable amount of existing scar tissue and was custom drawn to accommodate the ridges and planes of skin. The last picture is the day after; this woman is a bit of a masochist and had friends slap her fresh cutting. The bruising, though not recommended, is lovely.

Chinese Happy Dragon

Another piece to commemorate personal growth and change; this is the astrolgical symbol for Pisces.

This is a re-cut on an existing scar. The re-cut was done for fun and pleasure and the joyful rush of it all.
